Swiss Bilateral Programme of SERI
ETH Zurich is the Leading House for the bilateral science and technology cooperation programme of Switzerland with China (incl. Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN region. Mandated by Switzerland's State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), ETH Zurich is in charge of promoting and fostering scientific cooperation with key institutions in the region for the funding period 2021–2024. The funding instruments within the programme are open to researchers of all Swiss universities, universities of applied sciences, universities of teacher education, and research institutes.

Open Calls
2024 Consolidation Grants Call
The 2024 Consolidation Grants Call is now open. The Leading House Asia is offering grants up to 50 kCHF for strenghtening existing collaborations. Application deadline is 15 June 2024.
2024 Early-Career Grant Call
The 2024 Early-Career Grant Call is now open. The Leading House Asia is offering 3 to 6-month research stays in any country/terriroty in East and Southeast Asia. The call is now closed.
2023 Call for Applied Research Partnership Grants
The Leading House Asia launches the call for Applied Research Partnership Grants to support the deepening of an existing partnership or the establishment of a new partnership through a joint research project or activities in the field of education. The call is open for Switzerland-?based researchers collaborating with an Asia-?based partner. The application deadline is on 31 January 2024.
Other Funding Resources
In the context of the Sino-Swiss Science and Technology Cooperation (SSSTC), the SNSF and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) launched a second call for Joint Research Projects (JRPs).
Joint Research Projects (JRPs) allow researchers in Switzerland to collaborate with researchers in China. The projects will have a duration of between three and four years, with funding on the Swiss side amounting to a maximum of CHF 350,000 per project. The costs covered by the grants are comparable to those covered in national SNSF projects (equipment, research funds, salaries).

Deadline for voluntary pre-registration: 21 May 2021

A maximum of 15 projects can be funded based on the call.

The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) and the Swiss Innovation Agency (Innosuisse) launch their joint call 2021 to fund science-based innovation projects between Switzerland and South Korea. The call for joint innovation projects is aimed at companies and research institutions in Switzerland and South Korea (consortia) looking to carry out a joint science-based innovation project.
Opening date: February 1 2021.
Deadline for pre-proposals: 30 April 2021.
Communication of recommendation for next step: beginning of June 2021.
Submission deadline for Full-proposals: August 2 2021.
Communication of evaluation results and decision: end of October 2021.

The Japanese MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) offers one or two scholarships to Swiss students and artists who wish to study at Japanese universities as research students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2022.
Fields of study
Fields of study must be subjects which applicants will be able to study and research at Japanese universities.
Eligibility
- Swiss nationality
- Age: born on or after April 2, 1987.
- Academic Requirements: university graduates and completed at least 16 years of formal education.
- Major Field of Study: Applicant should apply for the field of study he/she studied at the previous university or any related field. Applicant must choose a field on which he/she can receive education and perform research at the university of his/her choice.
- Japanese Skills: willingness to learn the Japanese language, interested in Japan and enthusiastic about deepening his/her understanding of Japan after arriving, and capable of engaging in study and research while adapting himself/herself to life in Japan.
Timeline
- Application deadline: 14 June 2021.
- Earliest arrival in Japan: October 2022.
