Nan-Yao Su Award to Consuelo De Moraes
Consuelo De Moraes, Professor of Biocommunication and Entomology at the Institue of Agricultural Sciences (IAS), has received the prestigious Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology from the Entomological Society of America (ESA).
The Nan-Yao Su Award recognizes scientists whose research accomplishments demonstrate an ability to identify problems and develop creative solutions that have significant impacts on the field of Entomology.
The work of Consuelo De Moraes has produced numerous ground-breaking studies documenting novel and often unexpected aspects of chemical communication among plants, insects, and other organisms. In addition to exploring the complex and sophisticated information that plant odors can convey to insect herbivores and their natural enemies, research from her program has shown that plants themselves detect and respond to a variety of olfactory cues, including some insect pheromones.
She has also made important contributions to the field of disease chemical ecology, exploring the role of olfactory cues in mediating disease transmission by insect vectors as well as their potential use as diagnostic biomarkers. In addition to its broad influence within the scientific community, De Moraes has also reached a broader audience, being featured in several life science textbooks and documentary films, as well as numerous articles in the scientific and popular press. Consuelo De Moraes will be honored in November at the Joint Annual Meeting of the Entomological Societies of America, Canada, and British Columbia, in Vancouver.
