extract – the new exhibition space of the Collections and Archives
The riches of the Collections and Archives of ETH Zurich in one space: beginning this summer, extract will bring together a diverse range of objects and documents to address current research questions
The inaugural exhibition
The first exhibition at extract will open on 24 August 2023 with a vernissage. Using exhibits from the Entomological Collection, the United Herbaria and other collections and archives, this interactive exhibition will illustrate the importance of biodiversity – and what its loss means for all of us. It will show the importance of natural history collections in the study of biodiversity over the centuries, and the role they may play in the future.
One space fits all – a little about extract
More than 20 specialised institutions are responsible for maintaining and providing access to the comprehensive contents of the Collections and Archives at ETH Zurich. From fossils dating back millions of years, extensive photographic holdings and manuscripts written by researchers to works of art and scientific instruments, there is always a different world to immerse yourself in at ETH Zurich. Now, we have created a space where these worlds can come together and join forces to explore some of the bigger questions – we call this space “extract”.
At extract, the focus is on the topics rather than the individual Collections and Archives. The exhibition space on the ground floor of the ETH main building will house annual temporary exhibitions from summer 2023 onwards. Each one will deal with a current, socially relevant topic. We will also examine the topics from the perspective of current research.

extract – big topics in a small space
extract explores topics relating to the interplay between society and the research conducted at ETH Zurich. The exhibitions and events programme provide a showcase of the different fields of research and plenty of food for thought. This enables you to experience the Collections and Archives in a curated, concentrated form, as a carefully prepared distillation – in short, an extract.
