Getting around sustainably?
Mobility is a crucial aspect of our lives. So, what options are currently in place, and what solutions will be needed in the future? Who’s in charge of the mobility infrastructure, and what responsibilities should we bear, as users? These are the questions the “smart moves” campaign will be addressing over the next months.

“smart moves” forms part of the VBE Awareness Campaign, which each year focuses on a specific theme. The goal is to encourage ETH members to take more responsibility for energy-efficient and resource-conserving behaviour in their everyday lives. Last year’s theme was Sustainable Nutrition, in 2023, things will focus on mobility and travelling sustainably.
If not us, then who?
As members of a leading university, we’re well-placed, in terms of knowledge and an enabling environment, to make changes to the way we behave. We’re aware of this responsibility and keen to play our part. Through our actions, we can set a positive example in the use of energy and resources, both as individuals and the university as a whole.
Making use of what’s on offer.
ETH Zurich offers a raft of sustainable mobility options including bike-sharing, e-bikes, and carpooling. These are either free or come at reduced prices for members of the university. “smart moves” lets you know about them! On 16 March 2023, for example, you can test e-bike options at Stefano-Franscini-Platz on the H?nggerberg campus, find out about the special rates and sign up on the spot.

Bring and buy
On the same day, 16 March, ETH Zurich will host its first Velob?rse of the year on the Polyterrasse at the Zentrum campus. It’s a great place to find less expensive but good quality bikes. From 9 a.m. you can hand in your old bike for sale, and between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. try out and buy another one. The bike exchange is organised and run by Velove, the student cycling club, together with the Student Sustainability Commission.

On the road to net-zero
Over the next few months, “smart moves” will be hosting guided tours that explore how we can live in a more energy-efficient and resource-conserving way. The series kicks off with Unterwegs zu Netto Null: Claudia Zingerli, Head of ETH Sustainability, will take you around the H?nggerberg campus, pointing out the initiatives now underway to take ETH Zurich to its net zero goal.
