?Great ideas don’t come from teams that look or think the same; innovation happens when different perspectives, talents, and world views are mixed and shaken,? states Elizabeth Tilley, the 2022 Diversity Award recipient in the ?individuals? category and professor for Global Health Engineering at D-MAVT.
The Diversity Award honours efforts to promote diversity and inclusion at ETH Zurich. This award aims to give visibility to social justice leaders within our community – just like Tilley. ?In setting up my Chair 2.5 years ago, I really wanted to create a group, and foster an environment, that would challenge me,? says last year's Diversity Award winner. ?I didn’t want to hire copies of myself, but rather bring in students and scientists from a range of backgrounds, ages, and disciplines who can come up with new perspectives to the tough problems that we’re trying to crack.?
Promoting inclusion at every level
Even if it often feels easier to gather like-minded people around oneself, we should constantly be striving to learn from others who are different from us, and to elevate those who may need an extra push due to different circumstances. The success and excellence that ETH represent are based on a wide array of talent coming from a multitude of backgrounds.
It is important to continue to promote this inclusion at every level of the institution. The Diversity Award ensures a broader visibility of diversity and honours individuals and groups who commit their time and energy towards outreach activities that raise awareness. The award also brings lasting joy to the winners: ?I am extremely proud of my award and it hangs prominently in my office. The award reminds me to keep working to make sure that everyone at ETH feels comfortable, so that they can excel,? says Tilley.
