The mobility behaviour of the Swiss population accounts for about one third of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Switzerland. One person in Switzerland emits around 9.5 kg of CO2 emissions per day. And this calculation does not include international air travel.
An app for tracking individual mobility behaviour
The Swiss Climate Challenge app was developed by Swisscom a few years ago. It can contribute to a greater awareness of the footprint of one's own personal mobility behaviour. The app is always running and - if the location service is activated - automatically assesses the distances travelled. Through direct feedback from the app, users learn to better understand the impact of their individual behaviour and are motivated to make changes.
The Swiss-wide external page public mobility challenge launched by Swisscom based on the Swiss Climate Challenge app is currently ongoing. The partners are Migros, Mobiliar, Swiss Post, SBB, Sustainable Switzerland, Energie Schweiz and the VCS. ETH Zurich, with its two ambassadors Reto Knutti, Professor of Climate Physics at D-USYS, and Maximilian Forberg, M.Sc. ETH Physics and until July the Intern at ETH Sustainability, is helping to mobilise for the Public Challenge both among the general public and within the ETH community.
Together for sustainable mobility
The common goal of the Public Challenge 2023 is to save as much CO2 as possible compared to the average Swiss mobility emissions per person, i.e. to emit less than 9.5 kg CO2 per day.
During the six weeks from 28 August to 8 October 2023, users will raise public and private awareness of their mobility behaviour. And not only good tips and suggestions will be conveyed. In addition to contributing to the common goal and reducing emissions, users will also benefit from incentives. Green Points are collected during the Challenge. At the end of the challenge, the points entitle the participants to take part in a draw for prizes that encourage a climate-friendly lifestyle. So being climate-friendly on the road pays off twice.
Download the app now, register and start the Public Challenge.
