Open access to a new therapy – It Takes a Library
Mandy Boontanrart's research is meant to reach those who need it most. With the help of Barbara Hirschmann from the ETH Library, she is one step further.
"What’s in here are the cells and CAS-9, the guide", Mandy explains as she pours a reddish liquid into a cell culture vessel. The next step in this complex process is to put the vessel into a nuclear factor, "which applies a little bit of electricity to the cells, and that pierces the cell and allows it to enter the genome."
Mandy always wanted to study biology. This was especially true when she found out she had thalassaemia, a type of haemoglobin disease that runs in her family and is common along the equator. Mandy is trying to find a treatment as there is currently no good therapy available. "It is very important that our research be accessible to everyone: investors, patients, family members."
She has heard that the ETH Library covers part of the open access fees and meets with Barbara Hirschmann from the E-Publishing Office of the ETH Library.
Thanks to Barbara Hirschmann's support, biologist and start-up founder Mandy has learned about her options for open access publishing. She can therefore ensure better access to her research results.
