Competence-oriented offer at ETH Zurich
Reflect on yourself, find support, and document competencies
We developed the ETH Competence Framework as a language for you. You can use it to:
- reflect on your potential, interests, and needs for development
- find offers that meet your interests and needs
- (in the future) document the efforts you put into your personal development.
The framework offers an overview of our university's teaching culture by describing the competencies that ETH Zurich aims to foster.
Explore how you can use the framework
1 - A language to reflect about your competencies
There are two textual versions of the Competence Framework: a short and a long version.
- The short version briefly provides an overview of the Competence Framework, describing the twenty competencies and competency domains.
- The long version includes more information about the competency outcomes (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) for all the competencies. This version is useful, for example, to gain a deeper understanding of each competency, and to reflect on the competencies you already have or wish to develop further. The long version is available in an A1 poster format (one page) or as a digital booklet (four pages).
Additionally, we created a version of the framework that can be read with a screen-reader (screen-reader version). As for the long version, this document includes all the twenty competencies and, for each of them, a general definition and the description of knowledge, skills and attitudes learning outcomes. Use it if you prefer or need to access the ETH Competence Framework via screen-reading.
All the materials are available in English and German.
2 - A language to make sense of our offers and find support
Lecturers use the ETH Competence Framework to formulate their courses' learning objectives and content, making it easier for you to estimate what to expect from our educational offer. Administrative departments and organisers of extra-?curricular activities use it to signal their offer and help you find the support you need during your time at ETH.
Below you can find how to use the framework to make sense of our curricular (VVZ) and extra-curricular offers (myPath) and find the support you need to develop your competencies further.
3 - A language to help you summarise your competence development
We are developing an extension of myPath to provide a more tailored tool for exploring your development.
This extended tool will allow you to
- Search for curricular and extra-curricular offers based on your profile (for example, searching among offers based on the stage you are in your studies and your interests in specific competencies)
- Keep track of the competencies you develop by visualising them as you complete courses and extra-curricular activities
- Document all the activities (curricular and extra-curricular) you have passed to help you reflect on your overall learning experience during your time at ETH Zurich and help you prepare to take the next step in your personal development, be it seeking advice or to prepare for a job application.
Stay tuned for more updates on this tool!
