Admission prerequisites
Entry to an ETH Zurich Master’s degree programme presupposes a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an internationally known university.
Formal prerequisites
Recognised universities are accredited by their country's responsible state institution. Your Bachelor’s degree must comprise at least three years of full-time study or 180 ECTS credits (1 ECTS = 25-30 hours of work) and qualify you for a consecutive Master’s programme without additional requirements. Any other recognised academic achievements must also come from a recognised university.
You don't need to present your Bachelor’s degree at the time of application, but must provide proof by the beginning of the semester if admitted. If you’ve been excluded from any study programme at ETH Zurich or another university, admission to that programme is not possible at any level.
We only accept applications which are submitted online by the deadline and which contain all required documents.
Academic prerequisites
Your background aligns with the profiles of requirements for the Master’s programme, and you have demonstrated good to very good performance in your previous studies. The requirements outline the necessary knowledge and skills, based on the content and quality of the equivalent ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree. Detailed content prerequisites are listed in each programme's profile to help you assess your admission chances.
Meeting the prerequisites, however, does not guarantee admission, since the holistic evaluation takes into account all the elements of an application, such as: the performance in the undergraduate programme, the ranking of the university, the background in the chosen field of study, the scores in standardized tests (like GRE, if required), the letter of motivation and the letters of recommendation. The Admission Committee will assess all these factors in their decision-making process.
Performance prerequisites
The application process is highly competitive, with a large volume of applications, making the admission process very selective. Generally, applicants should be among the best of their cohort to qualify for admission to the ETH Zurich Master's degree programmes.
To provide guidance and to minimize unsuccessful applications, minimum overall average grades have been defined for certain programmes and countries, particularly those from which we receive a significant number of applications.
