Newcastle University awards Silvia Dorn Honorary Doctorate
Silvia Dorn, em. Professor of Applied Entomology, has received the Honorary Doctorate in Science (DSc honoris causa) from Newcastle University (UK).
With the honorary doctorate, the university recognised Silvia Dorn's outstanding scientific work at the forefront of her discipline throughout her career, and her contribution to supporting, mentoring and promoting female scientists.
In 1992, Silvia Dorn was one of the first women elected to Full Professor at ETH Zurich. She was Professor of Applied Entomology, served as Head of the Department of Agriculture and Food Sciences and as Director of both Curricula. As Professor Emerita in the Department of Environmental Systems Science since 2013, she continues with selected international research projects and with her commitment to greater gender diversity in the academic world.
Newcastle University confers honorary degrees upon individuals who have made significant contributions in their area of expertise and to society as a whole. Silvia Dorn is one of four honorary doctors which were awarded. Apart from her, the best-selling children’s author Michael Morpurgo, the former Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University Professor Chris Brink and the computer scientist Professor Vicki Hanson have also received honorary degrees in July 2017.
