Requests for exceptions

An extension of an academic deadline is only granted in well-grounded cases, and may involve additional requirements.

If any conflict with an academic deadline becomes apparent, we highly recommend that you consult early on with the study advisor of the responsible degree programme and/or the Counselling & Coaching Centre. You can request an extension using the form protected pageRequest for extension of an academic deadline.

A fully complete request will contain the following documents:

• Completed request form
  
• Written grounds for the request, with the corresponding supporting documents

The request and all supporting documents must be submitted on time, i.e. at the latest by the deadline (closing date). The submission is regarded as on time if the fully complete request is uploaded at the latest by midnight (24.00) on the closing date.

Written grounds
Write a brief written explanation for your request and address it to the Vice Rector for Study Programmes.

• List the grounds for your inability to acquire the credits required for your academic level by the respective deadline. Focus on the entire course of studies, and not just on the last semester.
• Enclose documents which support these grounds.
• If your Bachelor¡¯s or Master¡¯s thesis is pending and you are only now beginning to plan it, include the corresponding documents, e.g. email exchanges between you and the professor you have contacted and/or asked to supervise the thesis.

Extension of the deadline to complete studies

If it is already apparent before the beginning of or during the semester that you will no longer be able to earn the required number of credits, the request must be submitted by Deadline A.

If all the credits necessary for the degree request can prospectively be acquired during the semester, no precautionary request should be submitted. If, however, it is clear after grades have been communicated that you have failed individual performance assessments, but it is still possible to earn the pending credits by repeating these performance assessments, the request must be submitted by Deadline B.

Extension of first-year examination deadlines

The deadlines for completing the first-year examinations are listed in in myStudies under ¡°Last possible dates: First-year examinations, 1st attempt/First-year examinations, repetition".

If it is already apparent before the beginning of or during the semester that you will be unable to respect the first-year examination deadline, you must submit a substantiated request to extend it at the latest by the final deadline for first-year examination registration (Deadline A).

If it is only clear after grades have been communicated that you will be unable to respect the first-year examination deadline, you must submit the request at the latest by Deadline B.

Extension of the deadline to complete additional requirements

The deadlines for completing additional requirements are listed in myStudies under "Last possible dates: Additional requirements, 1st attempt/Additional requirements, fulfilled".

Deadlines for completing the additional requirements for admission to Master¡¯s degree studies can in principle not be extended. Exceptions can only be granted for cogent reasons such as illness or accident.

Students who wish to request special arrangements should consult with the Counselling & Coaching Centre regarding possible compensatory arrangements before submitting a request.

A fully complete request will contain the following documents:

• Medical certificate
  
• If available: Decisions regarding previous special arrangements at other educational institutions

Medical certificate

The medical certificate must set out how far your disability or chronic illness causes disadvantage, and describe the possible measures which would compensate for the disadvantages listed.

Submission deadline

The request and all supporting documents must be submitted on time, i.e. at the latest by the deadline (closing date). The submission is regarded as on time if the fully complete request is uploaded at the latest by midnight (24.00) on the closing date.

Contact the Counselling & Coaching Centre at an early stage, i.e. if possible before you begin your studies at ETH Zurich, for information about combining studies and elite sport and on the available flexibility measures.

Adjustments to studies for students with elite sport status are determined individually for every academic and examination level, for compulsory internships and for the Master¡¯s thesis. For information on possible exemptions/adjustments, see the information sheet on combining studies and elite sport at ETH Zurich. Adjustments involve no simplification of learning or examination content. It is also not possible to bring examinations forward, change the mode of examination or sit distance examinations on the basis of elite sport status.

Extreme variations in requirements necessitate near-term planning which depends on sport, training and competition conditions. Any exemptions, e.g. for sitting examinations or for extending the maximum permitted duration of studies, must therefore be determined individually. The required planning should if possible take place right when studies begin, in consultation with the study advisor of the respective degree programme.

A fully complete request will contain the following documents:

• Completed application form
  
• Grounds, with information from the respective degree programme study advisor if needed
  
• Suggested plan for studies and examinations for the respective academic level
  
• Training and competition plan
  
• Copy of the valid Swiss Olympic Card

Submission deadlines

The request and all supporting documents must be submitted on time, i.e. at the latest by the deadline (closing date). The submission is regarded as on time if the fully complete request is uploaded at the latest by midnight (24.00) on the closing date.

Important to note

• Requests to split an examination block into two examination sessions or academic years (e.g. during the second or third year of Bachelor¡¯s degree studies) must also take into account the pertaining deadline for completion of studies. If an extension of the deadline for completion of studies is also required, this must be requested at the same time. Here applicants are subject to the same information, requirements and deadlines as all other students.
• Every request for elite sport status is reviewed individually. The resulting individual decision is not transferrable to other students.
• It is the duty of students with elite sport status to inform ETH Zurich if they no longer satisfy the prerequisites for this status (e.g. if the Swiss Olympic Card expires or is not renewed, or if the student withdraws or takes a voluntary or involuntary break).
